Interactive and real-time learning tools are essential in today’s educational landscape. We are thrilled to showcase one of our amazing features, Boom Live, a real-time learning tool that makes education more dynamic and engaging.

Real-time learning tools are valuable because they bridge the gap between traditional and digital education, making learning more effective and enjoyable.

In this blog post, we’ll explore what Boom Live is and highlight some key use cases where it is making a significant impact, including support for hospital homebound students, facilitation of teletherapy, and enhancement of in-class homework support.

What is Boom Live?

Boom Live is a feature within the Boom platform that allows real-time interaction between one or more learners and an educator. Launching a session is easy. You just find an activity in your Library, go to the action dropdown, and choose Start Boom Live.

Launching a Boom Live Session

This feature provides immediate feedback, fosters engagement, and ensures continuous and accessible learning, regardless of the student’s location or circumstances. It includes tools to control the learning experience, allowing the instructor to give the learner specific permissions. Boom Live can be launched with any Boom Cards, making it a versatile tool for tackling a range of educational objectives. By enhancing the learning experience with real-time engagement, Boom Live helps students stay connected and motivated.

Benefits

Encourages Problem-Solving | Educator can talk through a problem with the student, giving them guidance towards the correct answer.

Unlocks insights | Educator can observe learner’s mouse movements to gain a better understanding of their thought processes.

Teacher directed capabilities | Control what the learner sees and interacts with through mouse control, keyboard controls, navigation control, and more.

Improved Motivation | Students love working collaboratively and answering questions alongside their peers in a shared session.

Easy to Get Started | Share a link with a learner to start a Boom Live session.

Variable Pacing | The educator can observe the student’s natural pacing, or they can control the pacing to slow the student down and aid discussion.

Use Case: Hospital Homebound Students

Hospital homebound students face significant challenges in maintaining their educational progress due to physical, geographic, and health limitations. Boom Live provides a crucial solution by offering real-time engagement and interaction to students outside of the classroom environment.

Hospital Homebound Student

Imagine a scenario where a student is undergoing long-term treatment in a hospital and cannot physically attend school. With Boom Live, this student remains connected to their classroom. The teacher can conduct live sessions where the student can participate in lessons and activities in real-time with some of their classmates. Despite being away from the classroom, the student receives the same level of attention and support as their peers. This continuous connection not only aids in learning but also boosts morale by maintaining a sense of normalcy and connection to the school community.

Use Case: Teletherapy

Teletherapy has become an essential service in education and healthcare, and Boom Live significantly enhances its effectiveness.

Consider a situation where a student receives speech therapy. The therapist uses Boom Live to conduct one-on-one sessions. During these sessions, the student practices speech exercises tailored to their needs using Boom Cards. The therapist can observe the student’s progress in real time and provide instant corrections and encouragement.

For one activity, the therapist might give the student control of the mouse. The therapist can still limit the student’s ability to progress to the next slide and limit their navigation controls. This setup would enable the therapist to set the pacing for the activity. For another activity, the teletherapist could allow full mouse control and navigation controls, allowing the student to move quickly through the exercise. In a third scenario, the teletherapist may opt to control the mouse and navigation to demonstrate something for the learner. All three of these scenarios are possible within the same teletherapy session with Boom Live.

This real-time feedback loop is crucial for making quick adjustments and motivating students. The interactive, secure, and engaging nature of Boom Live makes teletherapy sessions more productive and enjoyable.

Use-Case: In-Class Work

Boom Live is also incredibly useful in traditional classroom settings, particularly for in-class homework and observation.

Imagine a classroom where the teacher assigns a Boom Cards activity on fractions as in-class homework. One of the students has been struggling with the material, and the teacher wants to observe their progress through the homework assignment. While the students work on their own individual devices, the teacher can send the student who needs extra help a special Boom Live link. As the educator watches the student move through the assignment, they can immediately send a private message offering assistance or clarifying. They can also walk up to the student with a quick suggestion.

In the case of shy or self-conscious students, Boom Live gives them the ability to blend in with their peers. Rather than being singled out in a way that’s visible to the rest of their classmates, they’re able to work on the assignment independently. They’re not worried about being physically pulled aside or having the teacher hovering over their shoulder. At the same time, the teacher gets the critical insights needed to support students in their learning.

This use of Boom Live encourages engagement from students who would otherwise be struggling, making the learning experience more effective and enjoyable.

Boom Live transforms how educators interact with students, providing a chance to see their mouse movements, thought processes, and progress through an activity—without needing to hover over their shoulders or be in the same room. Whether supporting hospital homebound students, enhancing teletherapy sessions, or improving in-class homework support, Boom Live offers practical solutions that significantly improve educational outcomes.
